HST now implemented:

As of July 1, 2010, Ontario harmonized its retail sales tax with the GST to implement the HST at the rate of 13%.  The sale of books has in the past only been subject to GST (5%).  Once the new HST is implemented, books will still ONLY be taxed the federal portion (5%), but the tax will now be called HST. First Here is Here!

When were streetlights first introduced to light Hamilton's streets?

Or, when was the first movie shown, or coming forward a few decades, when did Hamilton get a glimpse of their very own television programming?

These are just a few of the stories in First Here, a look at when things first happened in Hamilton. The firsts are not necessarily the first in Canada, or even in Ontario, although in many cases, that is how it is recorded in history.

Readers will learn that the first tavern opened its doors before the Steel City was known as Hamilton, that Empire Day was first introduced here, that Shorty Greens replaced communal cups for Hamilton's thirsty shoppers.

These and many more stories  - with lots of photographs - make First Here a fascinating look at Hamilton's history.

The Famous Brant Inn!

It has been a long wait, but the much-anticipated new book on Burlington's famous Brant Inn (a Burlington Historical Society project) is now available!

John Murray Anderson turned the Brant Inn into a nightclub that grew to be internationally renowned and put Burlington on the map.

With his personal connections with the Brant Inn, local writer Stewart Brown was able to bring the many memories of this once vibrant nightclub alive.

Brant Inn Memories recalls stories ranging from the entertainers to the Inn's employees, from the club's owner to the building itself, in a way that will take the reader back in time to the dancing era when big bands, swing and jazz were the essence of an evening out.

The Prints of King is here!

It's long, stretching from the McMaster campus right through Stoney Creek.
It's old, dating back to the very roots of the community.
It runs right through the heart of the city.
And it's home - or has been - to many of Hamilton's finest buildings, grand churches, various hotels, old schools, several parks, as well as countless stores.

Of course it's King Street!

There are photographs from one end of the street to the other, with old buildings, street scenes, buildings long gone, and a look at parts of the street from the air.
The photographs show a vibrant street, one which has evolved over the years, one filled with memories.
